5 Must-Haves in Your Parts Box

Between spring fieldwork, planting, spraying, tillage and harvest, ordering parts isn’t top of mind for most farmers during the growing season.

Keeping the right parts on hand means you can handle routine maintenance and minor wear without losing time waiting on a delivery or traveling to pick up. The parts that tend to need attention most are the ones doing the most work — and they’re often the same from machine to machine.

Here are five parts worth keeping in stock this growing season:

  • Filters
Dusty field conditions during planting and harvest fill filters up fast. A clogged air or fuel filter shows up as reduced power, higher fuel consumption or hard starts. Check your service intervals before the season and keep spares on hand.
  • Belts
Belts don’t always give much warning before they go, and a snap mid-field means unplanned downtime. Check for glazing, fraying or visible cracking during any routine walk-arounds. If there’s visible wear, replace it before it becomes an issue.
  • Hoses
Hoses are under constant pressure, and small cracks or fitting leaks can develop before a full failure. A slow hydraulic leak will cost you performance and can cause bigger damage if ignored. Do a visual check regularly and know which hoses are the highest priority on your machine.
  • Bearings
Bearings are easy to overlook, but unusual noise, vibration or rough operation are often early signs of wear. Dirt and moisture are the main culprits, so staying on top of lubrication goes a long way. Addressing a bearing issue on your own schedule is easier than a mid-field fix.
  • Wear Parts
Every machine has its own list of components that take regular wear: brake parts, hydraulic seals, cooling system components, electrical connections and more. Pull your machine’s maintenance schedule, take stock of what’s coming up, and plan accordingly.
